One day Benkei hears a rumor from his servant that a mysterious boy has recently appeared on Gojyo Bridge and has been slaying people, so he sets out to defeat the boy. The boy, whose name is Ushiwaka, is supposed to enter Kuramadera Temple tomorrow, according to his mother’s instructions, and he goes to Gojo Bridge tonight because it is the only time he has left before entering the temple.
When he arrives at the bridge, Benkei appears in all his pompous glory carrying a large naginata sword, and Ushiwaka mischievously engages Benkei.
A duel begins between the two, but Benkei’s bravery is no match for Ushiwaka’s fast and agile movements and Benkei’s naginata sword is struck down. Benkei surrenders, and when he learns that the boy is Minamoto no Ushiwaka of noble birth, he makes a promise of fidelity to him.
